Championing greatness in the Canterbury region with Tātai Whetū Waitaha

Heartland Bank has a rich heritage in Ashburton, and has found a meaningful way to invest in the Mid-Canterbury community that has supported its growth since 1875. With funds provided by the Heartland Trust, Heartland is actively participating in the development of the region’s youth by supporting the Tātai Whetū Waitaha Athlete Support Programme.

The Tātai Whetū Waitaha initiative stands out for its approach to athlete support. Recognising that young sportspeople need more than just training in their specific disciplines, the programme provides a holistic suite of services. These include psychological support, medical and physiotherapy care, nutritional advice, and strength and conditioning coaching. But perhaps more importantly, it also focuses on life skills, planning, and leadership development. The programme isn’t just about creating successful athletes – it’s about nurturing responsible, well-rounded individuals.

Ollie Bubb, an Ashburton College student, is a prime example of the programme’s success. With the help of Tātai Whetū Waitaha, Ollie has not only topped the South Island Powerlifting Championships but has also learned to set life goals beyond sports. “They help you as an athlete, but they also guide you to plan your next steps,” Ollie said, noting the programme’s support in all facets of his development.

The diversity of support reflects the diversity of the athletes themselves, who come from various sports and backgrounds. Each athlete’s needs are considered individually, ensuring they receive tailored support that complements their personal and athletic journey. The inclusion of services like female athlete health and leadership training underscores Tātai Whetū Waitaha’s commitment to cater to each athlete’s unique needs.

Makeleta Ula’s experience is another powerful showcase of the programme’s impact. As a talented netball player, she’s discovered how enhanced nutrition, conditioning, and mental skills can elevate her performance. “These have all made a positive difference to my journey as an athlete,” she explained. The programme has opened doors for her that were previously closed, providing opportunities she might not have had otherwise.

The work of Tātai Whetū Waitaha is as much about individual growth as it is about community impact. The success of these young athletes fosters local pride and inspires the next generation. When young people excel, it sends a ripple effect throughout their communities, encouraging others to pursue their ambitions, whether in sports or other areas.

Heartland Bank is thrilled to partner with organisations that place value on seeing the next generation achieve greatness, and the future looks promising for the athletes of Tātai Whetū Waitaha. With Heartland Bank’s continued support and the guidance of the coaches and mentors at Tātai Whetū Waitaha, these young sportspeople will not only reach their athletic peaks but will become well-prepared for life’s broader challenges. As they grow and succeed, they will undoubtedly contribute to the vitality and spirit of the Canterbury region.
